The Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá presents Jim Amaral: Etcéteras, the most comprehensive exhibition to date of the artist’s work. Spanning more than sixty years of production, the exhibition brings together over 250 works that articulate Amaral’s singular position within Latin American and international art.
An artist of radical independence, Amaral has consistently traversed disciplinary boundaries, integrating drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and assemblage into a unified yet unstable visual language. His work, often associated with a late surrealist sensibility, constructs symbolic systems where eroticism, mythology, and psychological introspection converge.
The title Etcéteras—derived from the Latin et cetera, meaning “and the rest”—functions as both conceptual framework and methodological declaration. It encapsulates the artist’s resistance to closure, his embrace of multiplicity, and his continuous expansion into new formal and conceptual territories.
This exhibition inaugurates a broader institutional reflection as part of MAMBO’s anniversary programming, situating Amaral’s work within a contemporary discourse while reaffirming its enduring relevance.
